Date of registration: 11 September 1962, originally as The Building Workers’ Industrial Union of Australia

The organisation comprises divisions, to which the members of the organisation are attached, namely:

• the Construction and General Division,
• the Maritime Union of Australia Division,
• the Manufacturing Division, and
• the Mining and Energy Division.

Each division is governed by both a set of rules applying to the whole of the organisation and a discrete set of rules applying to that division alone.

Each division is divided into districts or branches to which members are attached. Elections for office positions within the organisation, for which the term of office is 4 years, are predominantly conducted by the AEC. The Mining and Energy Division, however, holds exemptions from having their elections conducted by the AEC and from the postal ballot provisions under the RO Act.

The supreme governing body of the organisation is vested in the National Conference, which consists of the members of each Divisional Executive of the organisation.

The organisation’s governing structure also includes a National Executive, a National Executive Committee, Divisional Conferences, Divisional Executives and Branch or District Committees or Executives.
